Winter is coming - The Pumpkin Spice Latte is back

29 August 2019 | Abigail Duncan
Coffee fans everywhere are rejoicing for the return of the popular Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks. September marks the start of autumn which is when the Pumpkin Spice Latte is usually released, just in time for the darker mornings and colder days.

However, this year the highly anticipated drink is back earlier than usual and there is a new version available to try, the cold brew Pumpkin Spice Latte. The new drink has had a mixed reaction from PSL fans, but it seems that everyone will be trying it to see what it’s like.

Starbucks first launched its Pumpkin Spice Latte 12 years ago so it’s no surprise they’ve decided to add a new pumpkin flavoured drink to their menu. The cold brew collection is one of the most popular ranges at Starbucks with the famous Frappuccino’s being a big hit over the summer months. In recent years, coffee shop drinks have been in the headlines for the staggering sugar content, however, and it turns out that some of the festive drinks contain twice the total daily recommended intake of sugar in just one cup! This high sugar content unfortunately hits some of my personal favourites; Gingerbread Latte, Mint Hot Chocolate and Lindt Hot Chocolate from Costa.

The popular PSL reportedly contains more than 14 teaspoons of sugar and more calories than a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder!

I don’t know about you, but this doesn’t stop me ordering delicious coffees, especially in the run-up to Halloween and Christmas – bikini season is officially over!

Starbucks has announced that this new cold brew is actually 130 less calories than the original and is reportedly less sweet than the usual PSL. But bad news guys, it’s only available in the US and Canada and it hasn’t been announced as to whether it will be available in the UK – fingers crossed!

The release of this drink marking the countdown to Halloween has got me even more excited for Christmas and the festive drinks that come with it – I’m a sucker for a Christmas themed cup and sugar-filled drink to warm me up on a winter’s day! I wonder what this year’s drinks will be …
