IT'S GOOD NEWS

Netflix and chills

Creepy ideas are often dreamt up from creepy minds and this is oh-so true for the super weird PR stunt I’ve just stumbled upon…

Netflix, King of the ‘chill’ sesh and your go-to TV streaming service is known world over for its original programmes and documentaries. From 13 Reasons Why, to Stranger Things and Narcos, the television service covers everything from teenage angst to sci-fi cult classics and dangerous drug lords. Everyone and their nan can find something they’d like to watch. Or, like myself, you’re so spoilt for choice you struggle to make any form of decision before 9pm…

The TV giant has overtaken cable TV in America and has wiped the floor with somewhat amateur streaming services such as BBC iPlayer and NowTV here in the UK. It’s a staple in most households these days and many an office chat will often begin with; *gasp* “have you seen the latest episode of The Crown?!”

The Netflix service itself is advertised on our usual television screens, but its shows less so. You’ll get snippets of highlights and mini show-reels of their best stuff, but to advertise each of the shows available would take a lifetime…

So, in terms of getting a bit of PR under their belt and gaining some new subscribers, the Netflix team, it appears, are free to brainstorm whacky ideas to promote their latest show.

Now, I’m a little late to the game but has anyone else seen its flipping weird PR stunt?!

Netflix is launching a new show, Altered Carbon, which imagines a world 300 years from now, in which the human consciousness can be stored. All very futuristic and hopefully still a good few years from reality… but to bring the future to the present, Netflix has incubated a man* in a bus stop. Yep…

The man is incredibly life-like and can be seen breathing, sandwiched between some industrial strength cling film. The theme of rebirth is a prominent feature in Altered Carbon, hence the naked guy, incubated in a plastic bag, in west Hollywood.

It’s bizarre, weird and pretty creepy. It may not be for everyone, but it’s totally on-brand for the show and there’s no denying it attracts attention! Let’s just hope they let the poor guy out soon….

*Not an actual man of course…well, we at least hope not.
