Kanye Needs a Rest

22 November 2016 | Billy Thompson

Kanye West. American rapper, songwriter, record producer, fashion designer and all round general mad man.

Kanye (or Ye as he is known as) has never been regarded as a quiet, well-mannered character. Quite the opposite in fact, as over the last decade Ye has been involved in some crazy and controversial moments.

One memorable incident in 2006 during a live TV fundraiser for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, saw Ye go off script and make the big statement: “George Bush doesn’t care about black people”.

Another pretty mad moment was during the 2015 VMAs in an acceptance speech, Ye proceeded to go on a 10-minute rant and ended it by claiming “I have decided, in 2020 to run for president” before dropping the microphone and walking off.

But his most famous controversial moment came during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards (bit of a theme with award ceremonies here), where he rushed on stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech and grabbed the microphone off her shouting “I’m sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!”

The man just doesn’t seem to care.

This week Ye has seemed to have a bit of a meltdown. During his show in San Jose, he turned up almost two hours late and then went on one of his famous rants, this one lasting 25 minutes and explaining that he supports newly President elect, Donald Trump.

Two days later at a show in Sacramento, he went on a 17-minute rant after only performing 3 songs, dissing Beyoncé and Jay Z and then leaving the show.

This mad behaviour was followed by a statement saying the entire remainder of Kanye’s North American ‘Saint Pablo Tour’ had been cancelled.

As if this week couldn’t get any worse for Ye, today he has been hospitalised after suffering from sleep deprivation.

I think some serious time away from the public eye is needed for him to recover and regain some sanity. The man is a very talented artist who has made some great music over the years, but is clearly dealing with a lot of issues.

Obviously, this isn’t good PR for Kanye, but looking back at some crazy moments in his career, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t care.

All I can say is I hope he gets well soon!
